Revenge Porn: Cyber Safe Advice

If someone has shared intimate pictures or videos of you, or someone you know; whether this is online or offline, without consent - THIS IS REVENGE PORN. 

Anyone over the age of 18 can be a victim of Revenge Porn. If you are under 18, and this happens to you,  you can report the incident to the Police and/or CEOP.

Some incidents are perpetrated by ex-partners, some by strangers, and via hacking or stolen images.

TOP TIPS For Recovery

• Make sure you capture any evidence of the revenge porn – screenshot the material with as much information as possible
  (e.g. dates, times, user account information, location of offender)
• Contact the site the material is on to request to take it down
• If the material is on a dedicated revenge porn website, report the site and material to the host website. You can find out which company hosts a website by entering their web address on the ‘Who is hosting this?’ website
• You can also contact your own internet supplier to get more information
• Flood your social media pages with positive messages, photos and posts to 'bury' the images and/or video further down in search results
• Increase your social media privacy settings, even if only temporarily, to reduce the risk of people contacting you as a result of them seeing the material

Whilst they cannot guarantee removal of all images online, their partnerships with internet industry partners allows them to minimise the reach, and some of the harm caused by revenge porn.
